  •           G. Aulanier is a tenured solar physicist at Paris Observatory, within the University Paris Sciences & Lettres (PSL). There he works in the laboratory of space studies and instrumentation in astrophysics (LESIA). His research topics focus on solar eruptions and related phenomena, which are the main drivers of space weather. In particular he is the original developer of the Observationally-driven High-order Magneto-hydrodynamics (OHM) numerical code. And he is a member of science teams of NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and of ESA's Solar Orbiter (SolO) spacecrafts. He is also involved in the management of research and education. He is currently chair of the scientific council of French national programme for solar-terrestrial research (PNST). And he contributes to several national and foreign funding organizations and to various scientific journals, either as referee or panel member. He was formerly director of department of education in Paris Observatory, head of the solar group of the laboratory, and node leader for two European consortia. He teaches computational fluid-dynamics at the master level, he is involved in the tutoring of undergraduate student projects, and he supports pedagogical projects of teachers in primary, middle, and high schools.

              His most notable scientific achievements are : the building of the first 3D filament-model directly applicable to on-disc and off-limb observations ; the finding that prominence feet consist of stacked horizontal magnetic dips resulting from photospheric flux-concentrations that deform the filament flux-rope ; the discovery of the slip-running regime for magnetic reconnection in 3D within the so-called quasi-separatrix layers, and its occurrence in solar flares and in coronal heating ; the evidence that the onset of coronal mass-ejections (CME) in flux-cancelling active-regions is solely determined by passing the threshold of the so-called torus-instability. And in the last decade he supervised the implementation of the several 3D extensions to the historical standard flare-model : the amplification of electric-currents in hooked-shaped chromospheric flare-ribbons ; the development of eruption-driven large-scale arcade-dragging coronal vortical-flows ; the occurrence of intrinsically-3D reconnection-geometries at the ends of flaring polarity-inversion lines ; and various reconnection-driven effects such as moving-kernels along flare-ribbons at the base of slip-running loops, magnetic-field stepwise-amplifications in the photosphere, and drifting-footpoints of CME flux-ropes and hooked-ribbons.
