3D stellar environment of the Sun

J.-M. Malherbe, Observatoire de Paris

The Sun is located at the center of the data cube; the radius of the bowls is proportional to the absolute luminosity of the stars (LOG10 scaling). The (x,y) plane is the terrestrial equatorial plane. The direction of the galactic center is indicated by the dashed line and the artificial black bowl in the 3D VRML data cube.

ONLY VISIBLE STARS ARE DISPLAYED (apparent magnitude < 6).

The VRML data cube displays the spectral type of stars (color), distance and absolute luminosity in LOG10 (radius of the bowl) and in addition (dark grey) stars translated at constant distance of vision, in oder to evidence the 2D projection effect.
