Large fluctuations in intensities of heliosheath ions, particularly those with energies below 0.2-0.3 MeV, measured throughout the past 185 days suggest that Voyager 2 remains near the shock.

This differs from the situation at Voyager 1, which was evidently left several AU behind the termination shock that moved rapidly sunward over the spacecraft at 94 AU in late 2004, and this difference may help us to separate injection and/or acceleration processes associated with the shock from those associated with the turbulent heliosheath. For example, energy spectra of low-energy heliosheath ions differ at the two spacecraft. The high intensities of these suprathermal heliosheath ions and their relatively hard energy spectra produce high ion partial pressures that dominate those associated with the thermal plasma and magnetic field, indicating that suprathermal ions play a major role in dynamical processes occurring at the termination shock and in the heliosheath.

Avalanche Photo Diodes of x = 0.3 MBE Hg:Cd:Te - Is the Holy Grail of IR astronomy finally within reach ? https://lesia.obspm.fr/Avalanche-Photo-Diodes-of-x-3-MBE.html https://lesia.obspm.fr/Avalanche-Photo-Diodes-of-x-3-MBE.html 2008-06-09T22:00:00Z text/html fr
The talk will briefly review previous development by the University of Hawaii / Teledyne Imaging Systems (formerly Rockwell Scientific) of MBE Hg:CdTe NIR material used in the conventional charge integration mode and selected for the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 and in all three Near Infrared instruments of the James Webb Space Telescope. Probably because of that, important questions such as the orientation of Egyptian temples and the relevance of astronomy in this respect had never been afforded with the necessary seriousness and deepness. The Egyptian-Spanish Mission for the Archaeoastronomy of ancient Egypt has, among its various priorities, the solution of this problem. In order to achieve that, we have measured the orientation of some 330 temples in the Valley, the Delta, the Oases and the Sinai so far. The aim is to find a correct and almost definitive answer to the question of whether the ancient Egyptian sacred constructions were astronomically aligned or not. Our data seem to answer this question in the affirmative sense. Besides, they offer a very interesting new perspective in the field of landscape archaeology, a new discipline hardly worked in Egypt so far, in which terrestrial landscape, dominated by the Nile, and celestial landscape, dominated by the sun and the stars, would combine in order to permit the establishment of Ma'at, the Cosmic Order, on Earth.

Two applications of Galactic gravitational microlensing : probing the atmosphere of bulge stars and searching for extrasolar planets https://lesia.obspm.fr/Two-applications-of-Galactic.html https://lesia.obspm.fr/Two-applications-of-Galactic.html 2008-01-14T23:00:00Z text/html fr
A Galactic microlensing event occurs when a foreground object (called the lens) crosses the line-of-sight of a background star (the source). Depending on the microlensing event properties, the method has proven to be a valuable tool (1) to probe the stellar atmosphere of source stars and (2) to search for extrasolar planets around microlenses. In the first application, the source-star targets are usually red giants in the Galactic bulge (6-8 kpc), for which we could derive precisely their limb-darkening coefficients, to be compared to model predictions. When combined to spectroscopic observations, one can even measure the variation of the equivalent-width of individual spectral lines across the star disk, hence probing different optical depths, as we achieved for the event OGLE-2002-BLG-069. The comparison of our measurements to stellar atmosphere models has triggered new ideas on how to compute limb-darkening coefficients, or alternative laws based on a principal component analysis of stellar atmosphere models. A second important application is the search for extrasolar planets around the lens. Galactic gravitational microlensing has proven to be a valuable tool to detect Jovian- to super-Earth-mass planets with orbital radii of a few AUs. It is, for now, the only method that opens a window onto this mass/orbit regime. Microlensing has already led to four published detections of extrasolar planets, one of them being OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb, a planet of only 5.5 M_earth orbiting its M-dwarf host star at 2.6 AU. Very recent observations (March-October 2007) provided more planetary candidates, still under study, that will double the number of detections. For non-planetary microlensing events observed from 1995 to 2006 we compute detection efficiency diagrams, which can then be used to derive an estimate of the Galactic abundance of cool planets in the mass regime from Jupiters to sub-Neptunes. In both applications, since the signals involved are of very short duration (few hours), an intense and continuous monitoring is required. This is achieved by ground-based networks of telescopes (such as PLANET/RoboNET) following up targets, which are identified as microlensing events by single dedicated telescopes (OGLE and MOA).

I will start with a brief overview of the method, the teams involved and the current observational setup. Then I will present the main results we have obtained when it was possible to study the source star's amosphere, and their implications.

Secondly, I will review what could be achieve with microlensing in the search for extrasolar planets, present our recent discoveries and discuss the wider implications for extrasolar planetary research.

Ground-layer adaptive optics with Rayleigh laser guide stars https://lesia.obspm.fr/Ground-layer-adaptive-optics-with.html https://lesia.obspm.fr/Ground-layer-adaptive-optics-with.html 2008-01-07T23:00:00Z text/html fr
Adaptive optics is one of the major astronomical techniques, but, so far, only in the infrared.
